Six civilians injure in police action

At least six civilians including a man were today injured in police action at a mob agitating over district boundary dispute over the creation of Kangpokpi district without resolving boundary disputes at Singda village.
Large people from Chiru, Ireng, Kadangpal, Kangchup, Khurkhul and Phayeng staged a sit-in at Singda area of Kadangband part-1 by blocking the road in agitation against the government’s step to inaugurate a new police station of the newly formed Kangpokpi district at Leimakhong by upgrading the Singda police outpost.
Kangpokpi is one of the seven districts formed on December 8, which was bifurcated from Senapati district.
The police fired mob bombs to disperse the crowd which injured five women and a man. Some of the injured agitators were hit by the mob bombs and taken to nearby hospitals.
“We know the seven districts were formed for administrative convenience. However the government is acting against its commitment to resolve the boundary dispute first. We will never accept the government to open a police station for Kangpokpi at Singda” said Ibohal Moirang, media convenor of All Meitei Club Organisation Manipur, AMCOM.
The Apunba Villagers Protection Committee is of the view that Leimakhong is within the revenue area of village no. 38-Khurkhul and it is not proper to open a police station of Kangpokpi here. If it is required to open a new police station, it should be a police station of Imphal west, said Shantikumar Luwang, general secretary of the committee.
The club organisation condemned the police action against the protestors and tabled a memorandum to the chief minister’s office.
The memorandum states the district boundaries will be as par the existing boundaries of the concerned sub divisions. The creation of Kangpokpi district, Kangchup Geljang which has been notified as a sub division is strongly opposed by AMCOM. here is no village by the name Kangchup Geljang either in Senapati district or Imphal West district, added the memorendum .
Landless Kukis came and settled on a part of the land belonging to village no. 56 Kadangpal (Imphal West Revenue district) and named it as Geljang in 1984. As par the land record of village no. 56 Kadangpal and the record of Valley Reserved Forest (State Darbar Act, 1932) the said village, Geljang confines within the territorial boundary of Kadangpal.
AMCOM refutes the government decision of creating Geljang as a sub division of the newly formed Kangpokpi district.
The people bodies have warned the government of any outcome if the government fails to regard the people’s demand against the creation of Kangpokpi district without resolving the existing district boundary disputes.
The inauguration of the police station was kept halted.
