Historian of Manipur Gangmumei Kamei passes away

Renowned historian, former minister and BJP leader Prof. Gangmumei Kamei passed away today morning at around 8:25 a.m. at his residence at Majorkhul, Imphal, after suffering from health condition. He was 76 years old.

Chief minister Okram Ibobi visited his place to offer his respect to the departed and condolences to the bereaved family. A number of distinguished personalities including former minister RV Minthing and teachers of Manipur University and representatives of several civil society organisations offered their last respect to Prof Gangmumei Kamei stating that the State has lost a precious stone which cannot be replace by any in the future. Dr. Jitendra Singh, minister of State for DoNER also condoled the passing away of Prof. Gangmumei Kamei.

Gangmumei Kamei was born in June 1, 1940 as the second child of Late Chanaphul Kamei and Late Atonna Kamei of Majorkhul, Imphal, Manipur.

He did his schooling in Imphal and Guwahati where he passed out his matriculation examination in the year 1955 from Guwahati University and later attended DM College in History Honours and passed out securing ]2nd Position  in the university. He continued his further study in MA History at the Guwahati University and secured 1st Position.

He was awarded the university Gold Medal for securing the First Class First Position including the SK Bhuyan Prize for securing the highest marks in MA History of the Guwahati University.

After his school life, he began his teaching career as history lecturer at Imphal College from 1962 to 1964 and appointed as Senior lecturer at DM College, Imphal in the post graduate department of history from 1964 to 1972. He later joined as an associate professor in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Centre for post-graduate studies, Imphal from 1972 to 1980. He was appointed as a professor of history when JNU centre was riveted in Manipur University.

After his retirement in the year 2001 and while being in the University, Kamei was associated with several positions with the academic administration like Senate, Syndicate, Academic Council, Dean of Schools and many more. He was a nominee of President of India in the Academic Council of Nagaland University.

He was a member of Academic Council of the University of Arunachal Pradesh which is now Rajiv Gandhi University and some bodies of NEHU, Shillong and even served as Director, Institute of Civil Services Examination, Co-ordinator of UGC Centre for Tribal Studies and Co-ordinator of Inter-disciplinary Studies of Manipur University.

He was also engaged in many research projects, even supervised and guided many M.Phil and Ph.D scholars. He even published several books and many research papers.

Professor Gangmumei Kamei was the founder President of the Federal Party of Manipur which was formed in the year 1993. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the year 1995 and again in 2001 Manipur Assembly. He was the minister for Forest, Environment and Higher Education and has held important portfolios in the then Manipur Govt. led by Shri Nipamcha Singh in 1998 and 2001.

Professor Kamei is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
