High court re-summons blockade leader

Manipur High Court has again summoned United Naga Council’s chief Gaidon Kamei and his publicity secretary Shangkhil Stephen on Friday as his counsel failed to appear before the court.

Gaidon and his secretary who has been charged for imposing indefinite economic blockade and creating violence along the national highways in the state were today summoned at the high court. However, the court ordered to appear at court on Friday as his counsel was not present today.

When the case was taken up,  Sapam Shamungou, learned counsel submitted that his senior counsel, . Mahendra, who has been engaged in the case by respondents has gone to Guwahati to conduct a case being tried by National Investigation Agency (NIA) and will remain engaged for whole of the week, and thereby, request was made to adjourn the case for 10 days.

When the counsel, Sapam Shamungou was asked, that since the matter being dealt with by the Full Bench, Mahendra, learned counsel, should have given preference to the case and not to the case pending at Guwahati, he submitted that the matter be fixed on Friday, on which day  Mahendra would be appearing in this case.

The respondents would be heard on the point as to why not office bearers of UNC be directed to lift the economic blockade immediately, as the blockade Imposed happens to be Illegal in terms of one of the Judgments of the Supreme Court.
