Sharmila quits politics

Rights crusader Irom Chanu Sharmla who is also known as Iron Lady has decided to quit from politics and stay away from Elections.

She says she knows people love her, but it will need time to change the system to guide to her path of truth and honesty. She says she will continue her struggle against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 to withdraw it from the soil of Manipur.

Sharmila was expecting much from the people when she met people blessing her with tears as she campaigned for the just concluded election. But she found of no avail to go with politics as a strategy to repeal the army act and she decided to quit politics when she learnt that she got the minimum number of just 90 votes while NOTA gets 143.

She was contesting at Thoubal assembly constituency where the CM Okram Ibobi Singh contested.

Sharmila took up fast unto death for 16 years and remained in judicial custody by forced feeding. She changed her strategy fighting for the people’s right against the army act which guarantee the license to kill to the arm forces, by contesting in the election and formed her political party Peoples’ Resurgence and Justice Alliance last year.

Sense of selfish motive is very high; on one side they (people) saw their love towards me but on the other side they go for the money, said Sharmila talking to the reporters in Imphal today. “In such a situation it is difficult to expect anything good to make a difference in the society, so I will no more contest in election” added Sharmila.

The assembly election result of the 11th term gave the Congress 28 seats, BJP 21 seats, NPF 4, NPP 4, and one seat each to AITC and an independent candidate.
