Spearheaded by Manupur University Students’ Union (MUSU) and NEFIS today staged a sit-in demonstration at Manipur University campus pressing both the state and central governments to shift away the Assam Rifles post from the vasity.
President of MUSU Buchi Mayanglambam said they have earlier conveyed the authorities to shift the Assam Rifles post away from the university campus. “Is Manipur University a military zone ? The military force should be moved away from the academic campus”, added Buchi.
Stating that the students are pressing with the peaceful demonstration the student leader said, we have prepared a memorandum to submit to the government in connection to the demand.
We learnt that the existing AR post has been inside the university campus for more than 40 years and the localities around the university had also been demanding the shifting of the AR post from the campus since the past thirty years, said Buchi.
Both government and the AR has been pushing over each other while the AR asks for an alternative location. The state government is yet to give a firm commitment, added Buchi.
Chinglen Khumukcham, covenor of North East Forum for International Solidarity, NEFIS said “We are on all India call demanding the same as students in different places outside the state are demostrating.” “Why AR post exists in MU campus. Why fear psychosis is created to the students in the university” asked Chinglen.
Both MUSU and NEFIS leaders asserted that they will continue to agitate until the AR post is removed from the university campus and there would be strong form of agitations.
