Imphal: Manipur observed Patriots’ Day at different levels across the state paying tribute to the heroes of Manipur who fought against the British during the Anglo-Manipuri War.
The state function was held at Pheidabung also known as Bir Tikendrajit Park where Manipur Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal were hanged to death on August 13, 1891 on the charge of waging war against the British.
Every year on this day, other patriots such as Paona Brajabasi, Subedar Niranjan, Kajao Singh Jamadar and Charai Thangal are also remembered.
Subedar Niranjan, Kajao Singh Jamadar and Charai Thangal were also hanged on June 8, May 25 and October 15 in 1891 respectively inside Imphal jail on charges of waging war against the British empire.
Paona Brajabasi died in the hands of the British on April 23, 1891 in the war at Khongjom.
Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren singh led the observation in Imphal.
The Governor of Manipur Najma A. Heptulla in her message stated, “The historic day also reminds us that if we do not live and work together we stand to lose.”
“While observing the Patriots’ Day, let us pledge to stand and fight as one against all those challenge the freedom and integrity of the nation, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and other differences,” stated Najma.
Civil societies and local clubs across the state observed the patriots day. Local clubs organised literacy competitions and drawing and painting competitions on patriotic themes.
