General strike paralyses Manipur

Imphal, September 21: Twenty four hours general strike imposed across the state by CorCom, a conglomeration of several outfits of Manipur and MNRF (Manipur Naga Revolutionary Front) denouncing merger agreement of 1949, has disturbed normalcy in Manipur.

The general strike was called to protest against the merger of Manipur to the Indian union on September 21, 1949. It was alleged that Maharaj Bodhachandra Singh, the then king of Manipur was forced to sign the merger agreement following which Manipur became a part of India on October 15, the same year.

Shops and all business establishment, and educational institutions were shut down due to the strike. Roads wore a deserted look.

Basic essential services like medical and fire services, and rituals were exempted from the general strike.
