Prides of Manipur receive financial supports

Imphal, September 28 : Families of two under 17 national football team,  from Thangmeiband, Imphal West today received financial aid to enable them watch their sons’ performance at the Under 17 FIFA World Cup hosted by India between October 6 and 28.

Yengkhom Sanjeep from Thangmeiband Polem Leikai, who is serving as assistant commandant in the CRPF today donated Rs.60, 000 to the family of Ninthoingamba Khumanthem and Rs. 30, 000 to the family of Thangjam Boris through Rising Knowledge Club (RKC), Khoyathong, Imphal West.

Other supporters from different quarters have also donated cash to them for the same. ICHAM Manipur has also donated Rs. 50, 000 to Ninthoingamba family, today. Among others, Khumukcham Joykishan, local MLA and Polem Polemba had also donated Rs. 10, 000 each to Ningthoingamba family.

Ghanashaym Ngangbam of the RKC said many are continuously pouring money to the family at their level, specially to the family of Ninthoingamba whose father (deceased ) had left him to his mother, who is a vendor at Imphal market.

Eight boys out of 21 in the Indian squad are participating in the team. Amarjit Singh Kyam is playing as the Indian team captain in the midfield. Boris will play as defender and Ninthoingamba as midfielder.

Amarjit Singh Kiyam struggled a lot to be where he is today. His father is a farmer and his mother sells fish for a living.

Other players from Manipur in the Indian sqaud are Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem (goalkeeper), Jackson Singh Thounaojam (midfielder), Md. Shah Jahan (midfielder), Nongdamba Naorem (midfielder) and Suresh Singh Wangjam (midfielder).

There are three players from Punjab in the squad – goalkeepers Prabsukhan Singh Gill, Sunny Dhaliwal (Canada-based NRI) and defender Anwar Ali.

West Bengal also has three representatives in Jitendra Singh (defender), Abhijit Sarkar (midfielder) and Rahim Ali (forward).

Maharastra also has defender Namit Deshpande (USA-based NRI) and star forward Aniket Jadhav.

Hendry Antonay and Sanjeev Stalin (both defenders) are from Karnataka.

Kerala, Mizoram and Sikkim also have a representative each in Rahul KP (forward), Lalengmawia (midfielder) and Komal Thatal (midfielder) respectively.

Luís Norton de Matos of Portugal is the chief coach of the Indian squad. He said he has confidence in his team.

India will be playing against USA on the first day at Jawarlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi as the third match of the world cup, at 8 pm. The first match will be played between Colombia and Ghana at 5 pm at the same stadium.

The final match will be played at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake in Kolkata.

This is the first time India is hosting a FIFA tournament.

Altogether 24 teams will rub shoulders at New Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Margao, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Kochi, Guwahati and Navi Mumbai. A total of 52 matches will decide the champion.

Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh on September 22 wished the Indian team and shared happiness to the number dominance by Manipur footballers in the team.
