SANGAI FESTIVAL SECURITY MEASURES INTENSIFIED

Imphal, November 16: Manipur police in its continuing effort for undisturbed celebration of the Manipur Sangai festival and President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to the state, conducted cordon and search operation at Okram Chuthek in Imphal East, today.

Every year Manipur celebrates its “Maanipur Sangai Festival” since 2010 with the objective of promoting of tourism in the state. It is held from November 21 to 30.

In the surprise security conduct at Okram Chuthek at around 5 am a combined team of state police team and a column of 6 AR carried out verification of 550 persons including 200 women. At least 14 persons including four women who cannot give proper identification proof were taken to Irilbung police station for further verification.

Frisking and checking has been intensified as preventive security measures around the festival sites.

This year’s Sangai festival will be organised at different locations in Imphal and Bishnupur District. The decision has been made keeping in view, the increasing number of visitors to the state during the festival.

The main venue as in the past would be Hapta Kangjeibung (Palace Compound) and Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT) where the cultural programmes would be staged. At the Kangjeibung indigenous huts of various communities in the state will be depicted and open various stalls ranging from indigenous food and food from abroad. There will varieties of amusement parks opened besides varieties of stalls.

Khuman Lampak Sports Complex and Takmu Water Sports Complex at Loktak, Moirang will be main venue of indigenous sports and water sports activities.

Trade & Permanent Exhibition Centre will be opened at Lamboi Khongnangkhong. Various stalls will be opened amid cultural programmes and sporting activities.

International polo tournament will be organised at Mapal Kangjeibung (Imphal Polo ground) as another attraction of the Sangai festival.
