HIYANG TANABA HELD AS PART OF MANIPUR SANGAI FESTIVAL

Imphal November 28th 2017 (DIPR): As part of the ongoing Manipur Sangai Festival, 2017, Hiyang Tanaba, the Traditional Boat Race was today held at the Sana Konung Thangapat, Imphal East. The programme was held under the aegis of Directorate of Tourism, Government of Manipur organized by the Manipur Artist Association (MAA) Thangapat Mapal.

Education, Labour and Employment Minister Shri Thokchom Radheshyam Singh said that Hiyang Tanaba, the traditional boat race is an inseparable part of the people of Manipur and the State. Before appropriate roads were developed, waterways were the main transportation medium. Boats, he said thus were the basic means of transportation for Manipuris. The Minister appreciated the event of Hiyang Tanaba to have been organized at this specific location of Sana Konung Thangapat which had witnessed a numerous historical events of traditional boat racing.

The titular king of Manipur Meidingu Leishemba Sanajaoba said today’s moment of the Hiyang Tanaba has given a chance to reminiscence the historical importance of the event organized at this very moat. He assured that from next year, particularly the boat of Sana Konung will be made to use for this event of boat race.

Altogether four teams, (two male and two female each) competed each other at the race. In the male’s team, the boat led by Shri Yumnam Redy defeated Shri Moirangthem Sunil Myboy. Both are renowned film actors of Manipur. While in female’s competition, Smt. Athokpam Lucky Leima won the race against Miss Waikhom Kalpana Devi. The memento and certificate were also presented as part of the occasion.

The Hiyang Tanaba/Traditional Boat Race was attended by Chairman, Tourism Corporation of Manipur Ltd. (TCML)Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh; MLA Shri Thokchom Satyabrata Singh (Yaishkul AC),  Kongkham Robindro Singh (Mayang Imphal AC), Heikham Dingo Singh (Sekmai AC), Principal Secretary (Tourism) Shri Prashant Kumar Singh, Director (Tourism) Shri R. Sudhan, officials of Tourism Department and locals.
