Nemcha slams acid attacker

Imphal, December 4, 2017: Social welfare minister Nemcha Kipgen has condemned the acid attack to a lady who is presently treating at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

The minister visited the lady in the hospital bed today and prayed for quick recovery of acid-attack victim, Mangshatabam Menaka, 32 wife of Mangsatabam Santosh, 38, of Soibam Leikai Wangkhei Khunou, Imphal East.

“The culprit should be given befitting punishment according to law. This incident of acid-attack is a very rare incident in Manipur. I strongly condemned such an incident and pray this should not be happened in the future.” Said Nemcha.

“This has never happened before in the history of crimes in Manipur” said Sapam Banabir Singh, secretary of Citizens Club,Soibam Leikai, Imphal.

Menaka was attacked with acid at her face on November 29 while she was returning home on her scooter at Khurai Soibam Leikai Wangkhei Khunou at around 8.30 pm. The culprit who was identified Md. Shahdad alias Tomba, 22 was searching for a girl at the tea vendor run by Menaka on that day. When she returning home Shahdad threw acid on her. The acid hit on her right shoulder and some parts of the chin including and her right palm.

She was immediately taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical sciences and later referred to RIMS after giving first aid. Doctor said she suffered 10 percent acid burn on her body.

Banabir Singh said no one from the family of the accused turned up to clarify or negotiate till yesterday. The local club has decided that the accused family will be expelled from the locality permanently and the medical expenses would have to be borne by the culprit’s family until she recovers completely.

Shahdad is notorious for selling drugs in the locality and for many shady activities, Banabir added.
