HIGH TENSION AMID VILLAGERS OVER PIGGERY

Imphal, December 16, 2017 :  Tension between villagers of Senjam Chirang and Haraorok rose high when villagers clashed over land occupation in the bank of the river for pig farming, today.

Sources say a person identified as Ch. Rame, 42, sustained minor injury after villagers of Haraorok opened fire at the group of Chirang villagers who went to confront over the occupation of land at river bank.

Haraorok villagers rear pig at the bank of the river. Villagers of Senjam Chirang, Phumlou and Lamdeng depend on the river water for livelihood.  They told the villagers of Haraorok to stop rearing of pigs at the river bank. However the Haraorok continued despite repeated appeals. A large number of villagers of Senjam Chirang went to Haraorok to talk over the matter. As soon as the villagers reached the piggery site some villagers of Haroarok opened fire injuring Rame. He was immediately evacuated to the hospital.

Both the villages have been experiencing ill relationship after the villagers of Haraorok opposed government’s proposal to establish National Sport University at the site.
