Sekmai people warns to launch indefinite Highway bandh

Imphal, January 25, 2018: Progressive Youth Development organization has cautioned the government to impose indefinite bandh along the National Highway 2 if the government fails to provide ration card to the villagers of Laipak area of Sekmai by February 5.

Ahongshangbam Ashokumar general secretary Progressive Youth Development organization talking to the reporters at Manipur Press Club on Thursday said the public distribution system has not been functioning properly at Awang Sekma Bazar Leipak, ward number 1, also known Laipak. “Every since the implementation of the food security act on April 2016, only 30 households out of 632 are getting the privilege of the food security act as AY families.

After complaining the consumers’ affairs, food and public distribution minister Karam Shyam had instructed to the director of the department and again it was handed to the DC to take up possible steps to implement the public distribution provisions. “However, majority of the villagers have not been able to receive PDS items including Kerosine, but except for the 30 households”, added Ashokumar.

The village club has also another complaint. Urged the government to maintain quality in the construction of retaining walls at the Sekmai river bank nearby the location where the Sekmai festival was held recently. “The present construction work is as such it will collapse instantly at the movement the rainy season begins”, said Ashokumar. Only two cement bags are mixed to 16 tubs of sand for the wall construction, added the secretary.

The club had stopped the labourers from continuing the construction from Thursday. “The construction work can be continued only when the respective engineers assures of maintaining quality”, said the secretary.
