YUMSHAROL DANCE STAGED

Imphal, February 4, 2018:  Ahongshangbam Shiloni Devi of Khomdram Shelungba Leikai, Imphal West today staged “Yumsharol” dance at Apunba Leikai community hall at the Leikai.

The dance was staged as her project/director production under the financial assistance of ministry of culture. This is her first performance under the ministry’s assistance.

Shiloni started practicing Manipuri folk dances since class IV. Later she was trained at the Meitei Traditional Dance Teaching School and Performing Arts (MTDTS & PA) at class VIII. She has completed her master degree in dance at Manipur University and doing final year in B.Ed course at Trinity Teacher Training college, Koirengei.

“I will continue dedicating to promote our folk culture till my last breath” said the 25 years old folk artiste. We always look to place our folk music and dance in the contemporary art so that our folk art and culture are promoted, added Shiloni.

So far she has performed at the national and international shows including the South Asian University Festival.

The Yumsharol dance was performed today by seven artiste including Shiloni depicting the norms and ethics of house construction of the Meitei/Meetei society where the house is taken as sacred shelter of life. It recalls the stages of human civilization from forest dwellers to settled life.

The dance was accompanied with Pena (traditional musical instrument), Langden (traditional drum, Dhulok and Yumsharol song.

The performance was staged in presence of Padmashree Elam Indira, president of MTDTS & PA and senior guru of Jawaharlal Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) and Oinam Dhoni, visiting guru of JNMDA who attended as the guest of honour and president of the function.

Both the gurus spoke on the promotion of folk dance and traditional Lai Haraoba dance that have been inherited since time immemorial.

Waikhom Jotin, vice-president of BJP Manipur Pradesh attended as the chief guest.
