National archery championship launched

Imphal, February 19, 2018 (DIPR): The 6th All India Archery Championship, 2017 (Men/Women), hosted by state police department, was inaugurated today at Khuman Lampak, main stadium, Imphal. Governor Najma Heptulla graced the inaugural function as chief guest.

While delivering her speech, the governor said an event of such magnitude provides opportunity to promote national integration. The championship will surely bring the personnel close to and understand each other better. Appreciating the police department for hosting the national level championship in Imphal, she stated that the Imphal championship will set new records in archery as done in last year’s archery championship held at Birsa Munda football stadium, Ranchi. Quoting the words of Pierre de Coubertin, “The most important thing in Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well”, the governor encouraged the participants to strive more for better result next time even if some of them did not win in this championship.

Stating that Manipur is widely known for its rich cultural heritage and it is no less popular for the sporting talents of the people .The state has been rightly dubbed as the ‘sports capital’ of the country. The achievements and contributions of the state in world arena deserve highest appreciation. Sports persons including from police department have won laurels through their hard work and perseverance in both national and international level competitions. It is in recognition of the tremendous achievements and sports potentials that the Union government has decided to open sports university here. Since games and sports are integral part of individual including uniform forces as it keeps one physically and mentally fit. It is scientifically proven fact that for person perform well professionally or otherwise, it is very important to de-stress from time to time. Since archery is recreational as well as a competitive sport, the All India Police Archery Meet will help immensely in de-stressing the hard working cops.

The governor further added that  police is a very taxing profession  and the police force in the state face more challenges as they are saddled with additional task of counter-insurgency. She commended the police department for improving sports infrastructure, introduction of special training courses, recruitment of outstanding sports persons, coaches.

The programme was attended by number of personnel in uniforms.

It is worthy to mention that the championship will continue till February 23 and it is participated by police teams from twenty states and also by other defence forces such as Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, ITBT, RPF and SSB.
