River bank encroachers evacuated
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, March 10, 2018: Land encroachers along the river bank of Imphal river were demolished today at Minuthong area as par the Manipur Flood Plain Zoning Act, 1978.
According to Flood Plain Zoning Authority it was declared that the boundaries and limits of the Imphal river should be properly maintained with the imposition of restriction of use of land.
Sub-divisional officer, Porompat, Thounaojam Selina said the drive is conducted under four circle as Porompat circle, Heingang circle, Keirao circle and Bashikhong circle starting from Koirengei bridge.
A sit-in was staged demanding to stop evacuating from the place. A protester, Nazia said they have been residing in the area for the last five years. She asked why only five houses are evacuated by leaving the remaining houses which are constructed adjacent to theirs.
If demolishing houses at the river bank of Imphal river is for the welfare of the state then all the houses constructed at the bank must demolished, she claimed. She appealed the state to arrange an alternative place for settling on humanity ground.
Residents of the area tried to stop the officials but after negotiation between the officials and the locals including Imphal East police, people were evacuated from the place and demolished the houses.
