Pothashang News Service: Imphal, April 9, 2018: Women wing of All Manipur Students’ Union today stormed towards the governor’s bungalow and chief minister’s residential office demanding to punish rapists immediately.
The girl students also staged a sit-in at Keishampat, Imphal before they storm towards the state leaders’ office. Police stopped a group of the demonstrating students while some were able to reach the gate of chief minister’s residential office. Police stopped them and allowed to submit their memorandum at the chief minister’s office.
Nongthombam Bidyarani, convenor of women wing, AMSU “The government should frame an anti-rape law or hang the rapists in front of the public or jail them for life. Women in the state live in panic. We fear that we can be victim any time. The rapists here are let free after putting them behind bars for one or two years. So far appropriate punishment has not been given to the rapists.”
There has been series of rape cases in Manipur recently.
The memorandum asked for urgent intervention on the increasing number of rape cases. The memorandum cited 14 rape cases that occurred since January 2.
The students also demanded to provide special training on crime against women and children, gender and human rights based approach in general to the police personnel particularly the women police personnel dealing with the women and children related crimes.
It also demanded to establish a monitoring cell like the anti-corruption cell to monitor on the dealing of women and children related case by the police having experts from the field of women and child related field, students’ bodies, retired judges and police and CSOs.
