Court sentences man for murdering wife

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, April 18, 2018:  The Court of Session judge, Imphal West today sentenced a man for killing his wife.

The husband is Ngangbam Premjit Singh, 28, son of Ng. Ibobi Singh of Khurkhul Makha Leikai, under Sekmai Police, Imphal West. The district court on yesterday convicted Premjit under section 302 for committing murder of his wife Yumlembam Ningol Ngangbam Latabi  and the co-accused who are the in-laws of women victim have been acquitted. The charge was framed against the convict husband and in-laws of the victim in October 2015 by Sekmai police.

The final argument of the hearing was completed on March 17.

The learned counsel of the accused prayed before the court for awarding imprisonment for life and a fine. As per section 302 IPC, punishment for a murderer is either death sentence or life imprisonment with fine.

The session judge, M. Manojkumar Singh in his order states that the accused had committed murder of his wife by strangulating her on the 69th day of their marriage. The accused is at present about 28 years old and there is no record for criminal antecedents of the accused prior to the said incident. The judgement states that the accused is sentenced to suffer rigorous imprisonment for life and to pay a fine of Rs. 10, 000.

The court has also recommended for providing victim compensation scheme under section 357A of the court of criminal procedure to the only surviving family member of the victim, ie, her brother.
