Letpao distributes gas cylinder sets

Imphal, April 20, 2018(DIPR): The Ujjwala Diwas for Chandel district was observed today at Aihang village. This is a nation-wide observation under the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan and the Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayat. This scheme aims to provide LPG connection to 15000 places across the length and breadth of the country.

As a part of the function, YAS and Water Resources minister Shri Letpao Haokip distributed LPG sets (including each a gas cylinder, a gas stove and other necessary equipments) to 64 women beneficiaries from the district.

The minister was the chief guest of the function, while SDO Chandel Shri Ksh Sidharth along with a couple of ADC members and a social worker were the other dignitaries in the dais.

Giving his chief guest speech, Shri Letpao appealed the public, especially the womenfolk who run kitchens in each houses, to do away with the use of wood fuels and to resort to use of LPG connections. He added that doing so will drastically help in curbing air pollution and also in conservation of our environment by reducing cutting of trees from forests. He also said that using smoke-less gas cylinders instead of smoke-producing firewoods will help in reducing the major cancerous and other ailments that have been affecting the womenfolk and the public in general.

Regarding the mode of selection of beneficiaries, the YAS minister said that the task has been assigned to the district administration and for the first batch of distributing the benefits, emphasis has been given to those who are under the below poverty line, widows and who have not been accessed to LPG connections yet. He assured that in coming days, more beneficiaries from every socio-economic level will be covered.

Taking opportunity of the gathering, Shri Letpao reminded the people that Chandel district still remains one of the most backward districts of Manipur, and hence, everyone should take good advantage of every government benefits avail to them. He also asked everyone to lend their support in government developmental programmes. The minister also appreciated the ‘Go to Hills’ mission of the new state government.

Later, SDO Chandel Shri Sidharth briefed the gathering on the health and environmental benefits of using LPG connections.

The dignitaries then distributed the LPG sets to the chosen 64 beneficiaries.
