VDF launches 10-day arms-down strike

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, May 19, 2018: Demanding fitting honorariums as per present skill labour rate including arms allowance of Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel, All Manipur VDF Welfare Association on Friday launched  a 10-day arms-down strike and staged a sit-in at Porompat police station.

A VDF volunteer A.Chaoba said the VDF volunteers have been demanding to furnish appropriate honorariums to meet the daily demands. “We want to maintain service records and we are performing duty similar to the state police but we are less considered”, he added.

He further said that they have been performing duty without receiving honorarium for the last two and half months.

 If the state fails to meet the demand in these 10 days of agitation, we will start more intensive agitations, said another volunteer.

A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister on May 10. According to the memorandum, the honorarium of VDF personnel should be given as per present labour rate including arms allowance as per direction of central sphere on a regular basis.

It also said that the government should provide a job to the member of VDF personnel’s family in case of death or disability while on duty. As VDF volunteers have been attached to police station and serving all the duties assigned as of regular police they should be given thirteen month’s honorarium. It also demanded to establish a VDF battalion for better performance.
