Journalists union condemns offensive statement

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, May 30, 2018: The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) has strongly condemned the malicious and offensive statement posted recently by a Manipur unit BJP leader Soubam Nongpoknganba on Facebook, which underestimated, ridiculed and defamed the neutrality of the union’s member Paojel Chaoba.

The genesis of the case, according to a complaint lodged by Paojel Chaoba to the Union, triggered after a news report christened “Biren Misleading Public” appeared in the May 29, 2018 edition of the Imphal Free Press (IFP) to which Chaoba belongs. When inquired, it is learnt that the report was not a byline story as such Nongpoknganba has nothing do in dragging Chaoba in the scene, said a statemet released by the journalist union.

Nevertheless, Chaoba, being a member of the editorial board of the paper, stands by the report. AMWJU strongly feels that such hate, offensive and malicious statement should not have been made on social networking site by a responsible person like Nongpoknganba, who holds the post of state executive and convenor (Law and Legal Affairs Vibhak) of Manipur unit BJP. The Union has no objection in making a rejoinder or holding a press conference by the state unit BJP when it feels aggrieved and injured by such report. The manner in which Nongpoknganba made his statement tantamounts to malice, infringement and assassinating the personal liberty and character of Chaoba . Such statement has also attacked and breached the independence of media, it added.

Having considered Chaoba’s complaint in a serious manner, Nongpoknganba needs a public apology in due course of time failing which AMWJU is all prepared to take stringent measures against him legally. If need arises , AMWJU may also be compelled to write to the Press Council of India ( PCI) and its mother body — Indian Journalists’ Union ( IJU), New Delhi and All Manipur Bar Association for doing the needful, said the statement .
