University community reacts sharp over burning sports office

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, July 8, 2018: Teachers, staff and student bodies of Manipur have condemned the “attempt” to burn down the indoor stadium while the varsity community are taking up total shut down strike demanding ouster of vice-chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey said unknown miscreants set ablaze the varsity’s office of the assistant director of sports on Saturday night.

The varsity community said it was an attempt to derail the agitation demanding ouster from the post of vice-chancellor.

 “We have so far not conducted any hostile agitation. Last night’ incident was an attempt to derail our agitations,” said M. Dayaman, president of Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU).

The varsity community has been demanding a replacement for the “irresponsible” vice-chancellor alleging him of administrative and financial irregularities among others. He has also been alleged for using his university chamber like a night club.

The sports department office was attached to the varsity’s indoor stadium.

Fire brigade has intervened from spreading the arson further, but could not save the office and its belongings. It is said the cause of the fire could not be sort circuit as the power was put off at the stadium complex.

The university communities say evidences were found using of petrol to ignite.

MUSU launched agitation on May 30 and was later joined by Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs’ Association (MUSA).

The three bodies held an emergency meeting to discuss on the “attempt” to burn the indoor stadium of Manipur University; university guest house management lapses; and misleading statement in the media.

 During the discussion, the members reiterated that the members of the university community are fully convergent with the tried, tested and text book approaches adopted by the powers that be to derail legitimate, democratic and peaceful movements for justice.

The members also expressed their dismay on finding of unauthorised guest at the university guest house on checking immediately after the attempt to burn down the indoor stadium of the university.

Further the widespread suspicion of certain malevolent agents attempting to derail the democratic movement for ouster of the present VC of the university was reinforced by the discovery of empty petrol bottles near the indoor stadium and the guest house, resolved the meeting.

The members were shocked by the detection of unrecorded and illegitimate non-academic guest having dubious affiliation at the university guest house without charging any fees for accommodation and food.

The three bodies stand firm not to retreat until the VC is removed from his post.

The bodies also demanded the state government to put pressure to the Centre instead of waiting its reaction.
