Militants attack Army on Independence Day
Pothashang News Service : Imphal, August 15, 2018: Suspected armed militants, on Independence Day morning, attacked B-company of 6 Sikh Light Infantry base located at Theigothang village in Churachandpur district near Indo-myanmar border.
The attack took place within the jurisdiction of Singhat police.
Sources say the army base was attacked at around 5 am. The armed militants reportedly bombarded the base with several rounds lethode bombs followed by volley of machine guns firing.
The army troops retaliated using mortars resulting in the withdrawal of the militants, said the source. The gunfight lasted for several minutes. However no casualties have been reported.
A search operation is said to be in progress till the time of filing this report.
Militant groups operating in the North Eastern states boycott the Independence Day and imposed total shutdown from 1 am to 6:30 pm today.
Despite the boycott call, the 72nd Independence Day is celebrated across the state without any major incident amidst heavy security measures.
The shut down has disturbed normalcy paralysing Manipur ranging from educational institutions and transport to business establishments. State capital Imphal wore a deserted look on the Independence Day.
