Manipur celebrates Manipuri Language Day

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, August 20, 2018: Manipur today celebrated Manipur Language Day with the state celebration held at Maharaj Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound. Every year, August 20 is celebrated as Manipuri Language day in commemoration with the inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution.

 “I appreciate the members on the celebration committee who are working under a single roof to celebrate the Manipuri Language Day and influenced by the common theme to take the state forward with a sense of unity,” said revenue minister Karam Shyam.

The celebrating committee was headed by Art and culture minister L. Jayantakumar as the chairman. It includes Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Naharol Sahitya Premee Samiti, Manipuri Language Development Committee, Epthoukok, Manipuri Literary Society, Writers Forum Imphal, Leikol, Sathoulup, Patriotic Writers Forum Manipur, Imakhol, Manipur State Shumaang Leela Council, Apunba Manipur Matam Eshei Kanglup and Film Forum Manipur amongst others.

“Right use of language and good words play a major role in winning hearts and convincing the public even in politics,” said the minister.

Referring to developed nations like China, Japan, Germany and France, minister Shyam said that he observed their civilians enjoying a sense of pride and identity by using their native language more in public.

We all should coordinate and analyse the errors, weaknesses and faults in our language rather than blaming each other. We should try to find out why our language is still not included in the currency notes, he added.

Pointing out that more finance is needed in the budget for language development; he assured that the government should try to fill the gap it has with the masses in connection with the issue.

Organised by Patriotic Writers Forum, the language day was observed at Manipur Press Club.

“Manipur Literary personalities are important assets of a society which cannot be bought by any amount of money, said former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

Noted writer Tekcham Roshan was awarded the R.K. Kathing Tangkhul Literary Award 2018, Kiran Meikam for Pacha Meetei Literary Award 2018 and Sanatomba A.C. for Dr. Saroj Nalini Arambam Parratt Literary Award 2018.

UNESCO Manipur also celebrated the Manipuri Language Day at Hotel Imphal.

In connection with the programme, Sakok Thiren, a classical holy book of Manipuri language and Fiji gi Mami, a Manipuri journal dedicated to differently abled persons were also released.
