Manipur varsity students resume agitation — Burn effigies, storm Pandey resident

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, September 6, 2018: Manipur University students today burnt effigies of vice-chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey and registrar in-charge M. Shyamkesho Singh in front of the varsity gate to resume its strike demanding ouster of Pandey.

The students also locked the office of Shyamkesho.

Later the agitating student thronged at the official quarter of VC Pandey at Sanjenthong. They opposed the opening of Pandey’s office at Sanjenthong and allegedly having two VCs of the varsity.

After a long confrontation with the Police students were apprehended and taken to Porompat Police.

General secretary of Manipur University Students’ Union L. Kenedy said the students are confused to the existence of two VCs and two registrars of the varsity.  “We will not retreat our agitation until Pandey and Shyamkesho are totally removed from their posts. We will not appear our exams.”

The varsity had been paralysed for 85 days due to the strike launched on May 30 demanding ouster of Pandey. The strike was temporarily suspended after the HRD ministry has approved the memorandum of agreement signed between the varsity community and the Manipur government and the HRD ministry with the constitution of an independent enquiry committee to inquire over the allegation against Pandey by the students.
