Pineapple festival at Churachandpur

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, September 6, 2018: Manipur chief minister Biren Singh on Thursday inaugurated11th State Level Pineapple Festival at Khousabung in Churachandpur district where he announced inclusion of Khousabung in the list of selected places where food processing unit having cold storage facility would be constructed.

Biren said the processing units worth Rs. 20 crore each would be constructed at four different places under a central scheme. The list had already been forwarded to the central government a few days back, he informed.

About 35 farmers of different groups exhibited naturally grown pineapples.

Lamhoi Gangte, a farmer from Churachandpur said this festival provides the farmers a platform for marketing their products and thanked the organisers. She said she has five children and pineapple farming helps a lot.

Biren said necessary steps would be taken up to revamp the Moirang-Khousabung road either under PMGSY or state PWD work programme at the earliest. Stating that the central government is currently running a scheme known as Khelo India under which village playgrounds are being developed across the country, the chief minister also announced that the playground of Khousabung village would also be developed under this scheme.

Informing that 18 places had been identified for the construction of Sadbhavna Mandaps in different parts of the state, Biren said his government would also consider construction of a common multipurpose hall for different communities residing in the area as well.

Festivals to promote different horticulture products are being organised in different parts of the state. To name a few, Lemon Festival at Kachai, Pineapple Festivals at Andro and Khousabung, Orange Festival at Tamenglong and Ginger Festival at Pherzawl can be mentioned, he said and added that these festivals not only enhance sale and production of horticulture products but also encourage the sense of competition among farmers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a dream to double farmers’ income by 2022. He said ever since a ginger fFestival was organised at Pherzawl this year, ginger farmers of the district now have a permanent buyer of their produces, said Biren.

The chief minister observed that Manipur would become a developed state only when it exports its products to other states and countries in large scale.

Informing that the state government had provided monetary assistance to around 334 entrepreneurs in the first round of State StartUp scheme, the chief minister said notification for the 2nd round would be issued soon, he added.

Minister for agriculture V. Hangkhanlian said that such festival is just a mere festival but to encourage the farmers to produce more pineapples in the coming years.

Manipur Pineapple Festival Awards were distributed to different farmers of the area.

Prior to the inaugural function of the festival, Biren inaugurated Health and Wellness Centre at Khoirentak, Churachandpur district. Till now, 20 Health and Wellness Centre have been inaugurated under the Ayushman Bharat in the state.
