Sportspersons protest against illegal occupants, District Magistrate passes eviction order

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, September 10, 2018: Sportspersons have stood up against the illegal occupation of the Sports Hostel by elected members of the Autonomous District Council and have demanded their immediate shifting from the campus.

The agitating sportspersons belong to National Sports Academy, Imphal and Sports Authority of India/Special Areas Games players along with Coaches Association of Youth Affairs & Sports Department, Manipur.

Making their intentions clear, the Sportspersons along with Coaches Association of Youth Affairs & Sports Department  have organised a peaceful rally in and around Khuman Lampak Sports Complex today.

General Secretary of Coaches Association of YAS, Mr. H. Hemjit Meitei said, “We are holding out the democratic protest against the unauthorized occupation of the State Youth Centre and Sports Hostel  by members of the elected representatives of Autonomous District Council. As the Sports Hostel and Youth Centre is meant for the players, we want the occupants to be shifted elsewhere immediately.

Mr. Hemjit Meitei was also vocal about the parking of the three wheeler vehicles along the sports complex route with the occupants indulging in gambling and use of intoxicants. He wants this to be checked by the concerned authority as it gave a bad impression to players coming for practice at Khuman Lampak.

Mention may be made that, the Autonomous District Council members have been using State Youth Centre and Sports Hostel Number -1, from time to time as their residential quarter for the last ten years.

Presently six ADC members including three from Tamenglong District and three from Ukhrul District have been residing in it. The ADC members from Ukhrul are S.Thotasheng, Samson Khodang and Ngaranchui while from Tamenglong are KP Meirijin, Zhino Kamei and Kamei Khakpou.

It may be recalled that, the previous Congress government had allowed accomodation of the ADC Members at the Youth Centre and Sports Hostel. Though the ADC Bhavan is located at Chingmeirong in Imphal East, there had been instances of bomb attacks to ADC Members near their quarter gate many years back and with fear gripping up none of the ADC members were willing to stay in the quarter, resulting to shifting elsewhere including the Sports Hostel.

In the meantime, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Porompat Imphal East on August 29 had served notice to vacate the rooms and in this regard the six ADC members had written to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on last Saturday for extension of stay for one month for making alternative arrangements. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh later instructed the Tribal Affairs & Hills official to look into the matter.

In a late development, it was learnt that the District Magistrate, Porompat along with Police have swooped down to  Youth Centre and Sports Hostel. asking  six ADC members to vacate the hostel immediately and removed theirs belongings outside the hostel. However it is reported that the ADC members refused to vacate.
