Andro people performs Langban Lam-haiba

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, September 20, 2018: Villagers of Andro of Manipur’s Imphal East district have a unique traditional ritual of inviting ancestors’ soul and offer them food, flowers and fruits as annual observation.

The offering is made paying tribute to the ancestral heavenly souls.

The ritual is practiced on the first Sunday of the traditional month Langban. For this season it was held on September 16.

The ritual called Langban Lam-haiba begins with preparation of floor space for the souls to land to enjoy the offering.

Naharup Pana Shang (youth group) and Ahallup Pana Shang (elder group) of seven clans make the offering. On the east the youth make the offering while the group of elders make it in the west, in different patterns.

Chingakham Gandhar, chief of Andro village (Khullakpa) told Pothashang that this tradition has been practiced since the time of Gods till today.  It is a tradition of offering foods to the souls of our ancestors in the month of Langban.
