Women street vendors demand alternative vending site

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, October 28, 2018: Women street vendors vending at Nagamapal Kasturi Thong Awang Maikei Keithel has appealed the government to revoke the plan of turning their vending site into a parking lot or otherwise provide them an alternative vending site in the Imphal city.

Protesting against the government plan to provide the site a parking lot the street vendors today staged a sit-in at their vending site.

Vending has been our means of livelihood since 1992. The Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) has been allowing us since 2009 to vend here for which they collect fees from us. They don’t provide us license and we are not aware of the eviction, said a protesting vendor.

The protestors said that they are ready to settle for their vending by paying the parking fees to the parking service agencies.

Many of the street vendors vending along the Nagamapal stretch are vending at the parking lot of IMC by paying fees to the parking agency.

Municipal administration, housing and urban development (MAHUD) minister, Th. Shyamkumar had assured us of providing vendor license and vending area but refused to give written assurance by saying that he believes more in action than document works, said the vendors.

Later chief minister, N. Biren announced to prohibit vending here. We approached the chief minister. He told us to meet the MAHUD minister and when we approach the MAHUD minister he asked us to meet the chief minister. We are twisted, said a protestor.
