Magnificent Mary triumphs with sixth gold — Her win is truly special: Modi
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, November 25, 2018: Manipur’s Chungneijang Mary Kom Mangte, popular as Mary Kom and entitled as Magnificent Mary for the sixth time champions in the Women’s World Boxing Championship held in New Delhi on Saturday.
She has become the first women boxer to champion in the world championship.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweets “Congratulations to Mary Kom for winning a Gold in the Women’s World Boxing Championships. The diligence with which she’s pursued sports and excelled at the world stage is extremely inspiring. Her win is truly special.”
Chief minister N. Biren Singh posted “Congratulations Mary Kom on winning the world boxing championship for a record of 6 times. We are all proud of you. ”
She beat Hanna Okhota in an unanimous 5-0 verdict in the 48kg category summit bout.
The result was 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 in favour of Mary Kom.
The 35 years old mother of three boys Padma Shri Mary Kom and winner of several titles including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Bhushan, etc aims for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
