Manipur leaders greet people on Nupi Lal

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, December 11, 2018: On the occasion of Nupi Lal Numit (Nupi Lal Day) that falls on December 12, Manipur governor Najma Heptulla, chief minister N. Biren Singh and others greeted people of Manipur with best wishes.

Heptulla in her message said it is quiet befitting to remember those large numbers of women who fought against the oppressive economic and administrative policies of Manipur Maharaja and the then British government in Manipur in 1939. They stormed at the state Durbar office asking for immediate stoppage of rice export, in which around 21 women were injured from the bayonets and buts soldiers’ weapons on December 12, 1939.

The revolt signifies the importance of women in the state and their role in the society, said the governor. She appeals to the people of Manipur to follow the path “these brave mothers” who stood up against injustice and fought for their rights for a prosperous and peaceful state.

Biren in his greetings said he joins the people of Manipur in paying tribute to the brave Imas (mothers) of Manipur who fought against the monopolistic policies of the colonial rule and came to the fore for bringing socio-political reforms in the state.

Social welfare minister Nemcha Kipgen, works minister Th. Biswajit Singh released message of greetings on the Nupi Lal Numit eve.
