Magistrate appointed for enquiry to Gaffer’s death

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, December 22, 2018: Manipur government has appointed Haobam Roshita, IAS, district magistrate, Thoubal to conduct a magisterial enquiry into the alleged custodial death of Md. Abdul Gaffer in the hands of Assam Rifles and state police on Thursday.

The order stated that the step was taken up to enquire into the facts and circumstances leading to the incident with a view to find out the compelling facts and circumstances leading to the incident and to suggest remedial measures to avoid recurrence of such incident in the future

The enquiry report shall be submitted within 30 days, said the order.

Abdul gaffer was allegedly picked up by a team of state police and Assam Rifles personnel at about 2.30 am of Thursday from his resident at Lilong Usoipokpi Makha, Thoubal, without providing arrest warrant and found him death at Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Sciences.

Biren yesterday told the House that a magisterial enquiry will find out the fact of the incident.

Five cops has been suspended in connection with the incident and informed the ministry of Home affairs for action against the Assam Rifles personnel involved in the incident, Biren said.
