Students outburst against citizenship bill
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 9, 2019: Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), demanding the Manipur government to declare its stance over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and pressing to oppose it, demonstrated a rally at Sagolband street in the heart of Imphal.
Police stopped the rally from proceeding further in the city.
DESAM vice-president, N. Edison said the bill is a venomous bill to eradicate the indigenous people of the North Eastern states. The student body warned that it is ready to launch a movement demanding political autonomy of the North Eastern states, he added.
Manjit Sarangthem, president of All Manipur Students’ Union, a component member of NESO, said the day of passing of the bill without listening to the voice of the region is the dark day for us. It is clear that the bill based on religion was passed for political gain and to suppress the people of the region.
He said even when BJP members, chief ministers of Meghalaya and Mizoram strongly opposes the bill and when AGP has expressed for breaking alliance with BJP the Manipur government fails to declare its stance over the bill.
All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has also asked the Manipur government to declare its clear stance over the bill.
The bill comes up while the Manipur people are struggling to protect the indigenous people of Manipur. We cannot take it lightly. The bill will give impact first to Assam and it will reach Manipur, AMUCO president Ph. Deban said.
