Manipur Muslims Welfare Organisation burn citizenship bill copies
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 11, 2019: Members of Manipur Muslims Welfare Organisation today burnt copies in front of its office here to protest against the passing of the bill.
“We fear that the bill has invited the people of North East region to revolt for a separate nation in order to save the indigenous people of the region from extinction. India government should note this,” said president of the organisation Abdula Phundreimayum.
The bill is a big threat to the existence, culture and identity of the native peoples of the North East region, he added.
Abdula said the citizenship bill was passed in the Lok Sabha to save refugees who were not included in Assam’s NRC list while People’s Protection Bill passed by the Manipur Assembly to regulate illegal entry and exit of outsiders in Manipur has not been given assent by the Centre.
Instead of nourishing the economically backward people of the North East region the central government is trying to allow refugees from neighbouring countries to settle in the region Indian citizens, he added.
Thanking the chief minister N. Biren Singh for his assurance that his government will protect the indigenous people of the state at any cost, Abdula asked how can the people of Manipur be protected from the impact of the citizenship bill.
He appealed the political parties in Manipur to work together for the sake of the people instead of playing blames games.
