Manipur statehood Polo Tournament on January 17

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 16, 2019: The 4th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament, 2019 will be held during January 17 to 21 at Mapal Kangjeibung, Imphal, tourism director W. Ibohal Singh informed during a press conference held today at Sangai Hall, Hotel Imphal.

Ibohal, welcoming the participating teams from different countries, said organising such polo tournament was a great privilege of the state to promote the game to different parts of the world. The tournament would also help Manipur Tourism in highlighting the rich culture and tourism potential of the State to the players from different countries, he added.

President of All Manipur Polo Association, Dr. K. Saratchandra said women had been taking part in many sports, however Women Polo had lagged behind and as a part of women empowerment, Women Polo must be promoted.

The Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament is a flagship event of Manipur Tourism aimed at promoting the state as the Birthplace of Modern Polo to the World. The tournament is a pioneering showcase of international women’s polo and establishes Manipur as the centre for Polo in India.

USA, Canada, Argentina, Kenya, India (Indian Polo Association) and the host team India (Manipur) will participate in the tournament.

India Polo Association and Team Canada will play the opening match at 2 p.m. while Team India (Manipur) and Team Argentina at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
