People welcome Goddess of prosperity

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 18, 2019: Welcoming the visit of Goddess of prosperity and peace Emoinu Ahongbi people across Manipur today celebrated Emoinu Eratpa with pomp and gaiety.

Chief minister N. Iren Singh on the occasion showered greeting for prosperity, happiness, love and peace in Manipur.

The festival is celebrated on Wakching 12 in the Manipuri lunar calendar.

It is believed that Goddess Emoinu comes down to earth on this day and visits each home to shower her blessings of peace and prosperity.

People lit up light and decorate their homes. A meal with the main dish of silver fish curry is offered to the deity, who resides at funga lairu  (a fireplace) in the kitchen.

Major celebrations at the community level were held at Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal in Imphal East district and at Yumnam Leikai Lairembi Lampak in Imphal West byLeague of Callow Patriots and Poirei Eethiba Lup respectively.

The celebration begins with the invocation of Pena Yaikairol and offering of rice, vegetables, fruits, traditional sweets and clothes to Emoinu. At dusk a fire place depicting funga lairu is lit up to welcome the Goddess at the ritual sites.

Traditional dances and music were performed by various groups at festival sites while rituals were performed praising the glory of the deity.

As per history Emoinu was first worshipped in the 5th century only by the royal family. The common people began to worship Her in the 15th century.

On the festival eve a music album Ibendhou Emoinu Ahongbigi Seithajaba dedicated to the deity was released by Salai Laithou Shanglen, a unit of Salai Holdings Pvt. Ltd.
