Gaan Ngai festival begins with message of love
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 19, 2019: Gaan-Ngai, the biggest festival of the Zeliangrong community has begun today across Manipur with the state level celebration launched amid cultural performances by youths at Chingmeirong Kabui village in Imphal East.
The festival which is celebrated for five days began with lighting up the celebration torch from the conventionally produced sacred fire called Mai Lampai.
Ho-hoing (an invocation to God) and offering of Holy Wine Joupaan Keimei to God and deities, traditional dance and music are inseparable parts of the festival.
The post harvest festival celebrates the bountiful harvest when the landscape is dry and the whole village is free from agricultural works. During the festival people turn to celebration, festivity and worship of God and honouring of the death in the form of ritual farewell.
Forest and environment minister Shyamkumar said Manipur is a place composed of various communities. The Gaan-Ngai festival is celebrated preserving the culture of the Kabui. He appealed all the communities in the state to respect each other’s culture for a prosperous and united Manipur.
The minister donated a sum of Rs 1 lakh to the Gaan-Ngai celebration committee and presented a sum of Rs 10, 000 to the youths who participated in the opening ceremony.
The festival of the new year gives us the opportunity to gather together and enjoy with friends and relatives who stay at distant places. With the celebration of Gaan-Ngai I wish that peace, prosperity and integrity be brought in the state, said Gaijonlong Golmei of Namguiling village, in Imphal East.
