Core committee declares to intensify protest

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, February 10, 2019: Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, a core committee of 72 civil organisations todau declared to intensify people’s agitation against the bill from tomorrow till it is “totally” withdrawn.

Convernor of the core committee Yumamcha Dilipkumar in a news conference said, we believe that the bill will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha by February 13, probably on February 12.

“We will intensify the on road mass agitation on Tuesday by conducticting it across the state without allowing single vehicle pass the roads,” Dilipkumar said.

He said the market shut-down protest by women vendors of Khwairamband Ima Market since yesterday will continue and it will be joined by remaining women markets.

The women vendors have been staging sit-in rally on the market street in the heart of Imphal since yesterday morning.

As the people of the North East region fears of extinction of the indigenous people of the region due to the bill protests have been taken up in all North East states, Dilipkumar said mentioning that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received by people holding black flags and the naked protest.

He said similar protest was also witnessed in Tripura.

“It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister and the Home minister insist our chief minister and his ministers to deceive the people that the bill will not affect Manipur to cool down people’s movement against the bill, he added.

We had already declared that we boycott the Prime Minister and Home minister in Manipur, he said.

“The chief minister has failed to guarantee us that the bill will not be tabled in the Rajya Sabha, Dilip said. If majority counts the bill would be passed. If not it would be transfered to the Select Committee. The chief minister feels the same. In this regard he told us that the Manipur government appeals the Centre to insert a clause in the bill so that it will not affect Manipur, he added.

“The chief minister is trying to appease the people with the option. We oppose the bill and it should be totally withdrawn,” Dilipkumar said.

The core commitee also declared boycott of minister of forest and environment Shyamkumar for “misleading” the people by saying that the bill will not affect Manipur and the people’s moment against the bill was insisted by Congress, in a public function yesterday.

“We boycott him until he confess to the people,” Dilipkumar.

Manjit Sarangthem, president of All Manipur Students’ Union representing six student bodies AMSU, DESAM, SUK, MSF, KSA and AIMS, said,  “We want to let whole of India know why the people of the North East region oppose the bill. If the bill is passed we the people of the region may stop contributing to the great nation. Why the government is in hurry to pass the bill? , he added.

He appealed the people to hoist black flags at their homes and public places tomorrow.

Meanwhile, five agitating women vendors a lady constable were injured when police tried to disperse from the Ima Market.

Police fired tear gas shells and mock bombs after serving an ultimatum to stop their protest by 4:30 pm.
