Rs 24 lakh worth liquor destroyed in dry Manipur

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, March 31, 2019: To crab liquor menaces during the upcoming Lok Sabha election season the state’s excise department today destroyed confiscated liquors worth around Rs 24 lakh since the past 20 days.

Manipur has been a dry state since 1991.

With the announcement of the date of Lok Sabha election on March 10, the department conducted raids at vulnerable areas in Imphal East and Imphal West and other parts of the state ahead of the election.

Deputy superintendent of excise Th. Imo told reporters that 425 raids were conducted and detected 325 cases and arrested 325 persons.

Till yesterday the excise department could seize 2622.890 litres of Indian made foreign liquor, 850.165 litres of Beer and 5461.875 litres of Country Liquor. The liquors would value Rs 23,74,965. A sum of Rs 4, 09,950 were imposed, Imo said.

The liquors were torched at the complex of Excise Headquarters, Lamphelpat here.

Imo said similar destruction of liquors will be conducted at Bishnupur and Thoubal soon.

The department will continue to remain alert till the end of the vote counting, he added.

The election polls fall on April 11 and 18 for Manipur and the date of counting is May 23.

The department has also notified that the poll days and counting day will remain dry for the security forces who are exempted from the liquor prohibition Act, Imo said.

The department has opened 10 check gates for extensive vigil over inter-state and inter-district movement of vehicles for monitoring the illegal transportation of liquors as per the guidelines of the ECI. The department has sought inter-state coordination among the Excise Commissioners of neighbouring states and requested to extend support to check the state borders with Manipur to prevent the movement of illicit liquor into the state, Imo said.

He said the department has also opened a Control Room at Excise Head Quarter, Lamphelpat with dedicated helpline number 0385-2412655 and email The control room has monitor overall activities of DLNO’s, enforcement teams and check gates with round the clock service. The control room complied the data submitted by different DLNOs and prepared the alternatives day reports for seizure if IMFL, beer and country liquor for onwards submission to the CEO Manipur with a copy to ECI.
