Noisy bikes seized

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, May 9, 2019: As  a part of drive against modified bikes using noisy silencers Manipur police today seized 32 modified bikes at Tidim road in Imphal West.

Silencers will be replaced by original ones by the owner at the police station. The owners will be produced before the concerned court and face penalty according to law, said police.

Manipur pollution Control Board (MPCB), L. Radhakishore on September 1 last year released an order to banned modified exhaust silencers.

According to the chairman of MPCB, as there is a permissible limit of boise ambient in the city, necessary action will be taken up against those who are going beyond the restrictions.

Superintendent of police (Traffic) Khoisnam Sarma had earlier appealed the people to take initiatives for noise pollution free environment.

Under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, MPCB directed the ban of using loud silencers of motor vehicles in the state as a measure to control the ever increasing noise pollution in the city, thereby causing serious health hazards.

Experts are of the opinion that modified exhaust can produce noise ranging from 120 to 130 decibels but permissible limit for exhaust silencer is not to cross 80 decibels.
