MLA Joykishan declares not to participate in Independence Day celebrations

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, August 12, 2019: Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency MLA Khumukcham Joykishan has declared that he will not participate in the Independence Day celebration if the arrested agitators are not freed from custody.

At least 12 members of Thangmeiband United Club and JAC (joint action committee) formed in connection with the death of a class VII student in a school boarding in Imphal were arrested on charge of disturbing peace with their strikes and bandhs.

“The arrest of the people who agitate for justice over the death of the student has disrespected the freedom of citizens in a democratic country.  Even though the country is Independent from the hands of the British, people are oppressed within the country as the government does anything like a dictator in emergency as if there is no Constitution,” Joykishan told reporters here on Monday.

“August 15 is the day every citizens of Bharat celebrates Independence Day. It is a blissful day for all of us. As an MLA I always celebrate the Independence Day. There is no meaning for me to celebrate Independence Day when my people are suffering and those who up-rise for justice are kept behind bars,” he added.

Joykishan said people of the state today mourn over the death of the student from Thangmeiband. The JAC has been demanding justice conducting different forms of agitations and even imposed bandh twice. Defying the police version on the cause of death of the student (which mentions suicide) the JAC along with the people intensified agitations. However, the government has deaf ears. There were many bandhs imposed in the state. The public support in the bandhs imposed in case of the death of the school girl is comparatively huge. This proves that the state government’s stance is wrong, he added.

“If the chief minister respects the Indian Constitution, considers himself as a Bharatbasi and prepares to celebrate the Independence Day, it is obligatory for him to make the people free from suffering. Independence Day celebration is meaningless while people are suffering,” he said.

“If the arrested members of the JAC and TUC are not released ahead of the Independence Day I will not participate in the Independence Day celebration,” declared the MLA.

The stance of the people whether they would enjoy the pleasure of freedom or not, lies in the hands of the government. It cannot be said people are enjoying freedom when the government fails to listen to the voice of the people who are uprising for justice, he added.

If the state government respect the independence of the nation those arrested agitators should be released immediately, the MLA demended.

The issue is not only for Thangmeiband, it is the issue of the whole state. Even the vice-president of BJP state unit protested against the stance of the government in the issue. It’s time the BJP led government to realise the truth. What will be your answer when your own party members oppose the government’s reasoning? He asked.

He appreciated the BJP Thangmeiband Mandal for opposing the government’s stance and submitting memorandum to handover the case to CBI.

Saying that in the recent agitation no women police were utilised he said he condemns grabbing the hands of agitating women and touching them by male police while trying to control the agitators. It shows the disrespect of women by the government, he said.
