Anglo-Kuki war hero memorial complex inaugurated

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, September 27, 2019: Deputy chief minister Y. Joykumar on Friday inaugurated the memorial complex of ‘Anglo-Kuki war (1917-1919)’hero Enjakhup Kholhou at Jolzam village in Churachandpur district.

The minister called upon all concerned to foster the spirit of oneness and better understanding among all for the state’s unity and harmony.

“We respect the heroes of the Kukis much as I respect the heroes of the Meiteis,” he said. By showing mutual respect among all communities living in the state the spirit of oneness will gradually come about, he added.

He said one of the main factors responsible for the ‘Anglo-Kuki war’ was the Kuki chiefs’ refusal to be subjugated by the Britishthrough the raising of the Labour Corps.  Joykumar called upon all concerned particularly the Kuki brethren to preserve their spirit of resistance to any forms of subjugation.

Dwelling on the Anglo-Kuki war, Joykumarsaid saidt the Anglo-Kuki war could have been averted had the British authority which administered the then hill areasclearly understood the nature and capabilitiesof the Kukis.

He appealed to all to remove the myriads of problem which causeddifficulties in administering the state in order to bringin peace and prosperity in the State by promoting understanding among all.

Paying floral tributes to the late Enjakhup Kholhou, presentation of colourful cultural items and songs by various artistes marked the inauguration of the memorial complex.
