Transporters caution steering-down strike

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, October 10, 2019: Transporters has cautioned to launch steering-down strike if National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) fail to complete renovation of Imphal-Jiribam national highway (NH- 37) within 10 days.

President of Transporters’ and Drivers’ Council (TDC), Hijam Ranjit made the warning during a press conference held on Wednesday at its head office, here.

NHIDCL had mentioned earlier that renovation of the two bridges will be completed by April 2020 but in a local paper one of the official of NHIDCL who hide its identity reported that the renovation work will be completed by 2020 without mentioning the month, he added.

Ranjit said the official must disclose its identity, by hiding the identity NHIDCL cannot draw curtain towards public in order to hide dark deeds which carried to get their own benefit. NHIDCL must clarify changing of deadline for completion of renovation work.

He said renovation work of the two bridges is said to be going on, but labourers were hardly seen at the construction site. This will not help to complete within the deadline, he added.

He said during the renovation works maintenance of the temporary bridges must be carried out by NHIDC.

The condition of the two bridges and the highway is becoming one of the worst in the country though it has been declared as a developed one, he added.

One of the grand festival of Manipur, Ningol Chakouba falls on the last week of this month but with the worst condition of the two bridges transporters are facing grievances while discharging their duty. If NHIDCL cannot maintain the two bridges then it must surrender so that TDC would carry out the maintenance works on public interest, Ranjit said.

He said in past year TDC carried out maintenance of the two bridges and the national highway without taking any charge.

Renovation and maintenance of the two bridges must start within 10 days or else TDC will take up steering-down strike along the national high way, he cautioned.
