Ima Keithel witnesses mass protest against citizenship bill
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, November 18, 2019: Mothers of Khwairamband Ima Keithel on Monday staged a mass protest in the women market centre demanding not to introduce Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in the North East.
The women vendors stopped their daily vending business to stage the protest.
North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) and MANPAC has been spearheading movements against the bill in Manipur.
“The whole North East will be burnt if CAB is passed. Please withdraw the bill,” President of NEFIP Ningthouja Lancha said.
“People are mesmerised by the BJP leaders with their assurances. They promised that there will be a clause in the bill to protect the people of North East and Manipur. They kept telling to consult with stakeholders before the bill is tabled in the Parliament. Where are those assurances? Without consulting the indigenes of the North East they are trying to table the same bill in the Parliament. It shows their arrogant and authoritative attitude towards the people of the North East,” he added.
He said this is a very critical juncture especially for the state of Manipur. “We are very much apprehended with the consequence of the Naga political solution. In this critical point of time they (BJP leaders) are trying to table the Citizenship (Amendment) bill in the Parliament,” he added.
“If the government of India fails to bring out a special provision for the people of North East, then, we need to decide our own future,” Lancha said.
