Manipur people celebrates Emoinu festival
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 7, 2020: People of Manipur specially the Meitei community on Tuesday celebrated the Emoinu festival worshipping Emoinu the Goddess of wealth, peace and prosperity.
Emoinu Eratpa ritual is performed at home and at community level on the 12th of the Wakching month as per Manipuri lunar calendar. It is believed that Goddess Emoinu lands on earth every year on this day and visits each home to shower her blessings.
People decorate their home with lights to welcome the goddess on this day. A well-prepared meal with the main menu of silver fish curry is offered to the deity at funga lairu (traditional fireplace in the kitchen).
It is believed that the worship of Emoinu began in the 5th century when only the royal family worshiped the goddess. Later in the 15th century, the common people also began to worship Her.
Chief minister N. Biren Singh in his greetings on the occasion said, “The festival is celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour … I pray that this festival may bring happiness, peace and prosperity to the state.”
