Gaan Ngai festival begins in colours
Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 8, 2020: Gaan Ngai festival of the Kabui community begins on Wednesday with the state level celebration organised at Ramji Kabui village, Sagolband, Imphal West on the theme “loss of religion is loss of culture, loss of culture is loss of identity”.
The five-day post harvest festival is celebrated with pomp and gaiety amid series of rituals.
Forest and environment minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar took part at the state level celebration as chief guest.
He said a community needs to safeguard its respective age-old traditional customs, values and discipline passed down by their forefathers. The community which is successful in preserving the indigenous cultural tradition and values is identified as a rich community, he added.
Saying that Gaan Ngai is an age old tradition of preserving and continuation of the age old heritage of the Zeliangrong community, Shyamkumar said the rich cultural tradition and customs should be preserved.
Shyamkumar talked about the historical significance regarding naming of the Ramji Kabui village. He express his hope that Gaan Ngai will give a message of peace, brotherhood and make the state free from drugs and intoxicants where people follow a disciplined and a healthy lifestyle.
Producing of scared fire, offering of traditional wine to god and cultural extravaganzas were the main highlights of the festival.
