Great Britain champion 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo tournament

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January, 22, 2020: The Great Britain team on Tuesday defeated the USA team by 5-2 to champion the 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo tournament.

The tournament began on January 17 with the participation of six teams from USA, Great Britain, Argentina, Egypt and two teams from India– IPA and Manipur.

It was organised by Manipur Tourism in association with other Polo Associations at Mapal Kangjeibung, Imphal, the oldest living polo ground in the world.

Manipur governor Najma Heptulla said since Polo is the heritage of Manipur, its revival in this state is not only a necessity but also the duty of every Manipuri.  The revival of Polo in Manipur depends on the success with which it can meet the contemporary needs.

Expressing her happiness on state government’s establishment of a Pony Sanctuary at Heingang in Imphal East, she said that this was indeed a very good step taken up by the state government to preserve this rare pony.  She appealed to all pony owners to keep their ponies in the sanctuary and not allow them to roam here and there in the road as preserving and protecting pony is the responsibility of all citizens of the state.

Cultural troupes showcased different  flavour of art and culture of Manipur including Pena yakairol, maibi jagoi, pung cholom and thang-ta.
