Manipur’s Mary becomes first woman sportsperson to get Padma Vibhushan, Bembem to get Padmashree

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, January 26, 2020: Boxing icon MC Mary Kom of Manipur became the first sportswoman to be conferred Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award and former Indian women’s football team captain Oinam Bembem Devi to be conferred Padma Shri, fourth highest civilian award.

The ministry of home affairs on Republic Day celebration eve announced the list of Padma awardees.

The awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year. This year the President has approved conferment of 141 Padma Awards including 4 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). The list comprises seven Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhushan and 118 Padma Shri Awards. Thirty-four of the awardees are women and the list also includes 18 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 12 Posthumous awardees.

Six times world boxing champion, gold medalist in 2014 Asian Games and 2018 Common Wealth Games and bronze medalist in 2012 Olympic Games, Magnificent Mary won Padma Shri in 2006 followed by Padma Bhushan in 2013.

Former Indian women’s football team captain Bembem was conferred Arjuna award in 2017.
