2,000 kg betel nuts seized

Pothashang News Service: Imphal, February 15, 2020: In continuation of its crusade against smuggling in the border villages of Ukhrul district, Somsai Battalion of 10 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) seized 2,000 kg smuggled betel nuts loaded in three trucks at the vehicle check-post on Ukhrul-Tadubi road.

At around 9:45 pm on Friday, during a routine checking of the vehicles, troops of Tadubi post stopped three Tata 407 trucks and on carrying out a check of the vehicles, it was found that each truck was carrying 2,000 kg of betel nuts. The drivers were not in possession of any authority papers or challan. It was ascertained that the load of betel nuts belonged to a dealer from Ukhrul Bazaar and was being transported to Mao gate, Assam Rifles in a statement released on Saturday.

The recovered contraband load has been handed over to customs department at Imphal and it’s approximately market value is Rs 18 Lakh.
