No confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Manipur: Biren

Imphal: There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Manipur, chief minister N. Biren Singh said on Thursday and appealed to the people not to panic over the coronavirus.

He said the government is closely monitoring the coronavirus situation and taking up all precautionary measures to counter coronavirus in Manipur. Biren was addressing reporters at his secretariat.

He appealed to the people to undertake basic self preventive measures such as washing hands regularly, using of mask, avoid mass gatherings, cover mouth while coughing and sneezing etc.

He informed that the government has already undertaken preventive measures in the state since January 18. “Biometric attendance is temporarily suspended for one month in government offices,” he added.

The chief minister said a total of 1,21,629 persons have so far been screened at Imphal International Airport and various surface points of entry viz. Moreh, Behiang, Sinzawl, Tusom, Kamjong, Mao gate, Jiribam etc.12 samples were sent for laboratory testing. Out of which, 10 samples were negative and report for another two are still awaited, he informed.

Stating that round 352 persons have been kept under surveillance, he said, “We need to take such precautionary measures as the disease’s incubation period is 14 days. The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences has set up an isolation ward consisting of eight beds with four ventilators ready for treatment to any suspected case. At Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences too, an isolation ward consisting of six beds with one ventilator is ready for treatment.”

A control room has started functioning 24×7 with toll free number 0385-2411668. Dedicated ambulance has also been kept for transportation of suspected cases, he added.

There are around 90,870 confirmed cases of coronavirus globally and around 3,112 people have died so far. In India, there are around 31 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
